Your mother laughed, her voice tinkling like ice in a glass

I guess you tried a few samples.

Your father cranked open his window

turned the corner and accelerated.

You leaned into the wind

hoping to escape the scent of yourself

vowing never to repeat the

odoriferous error of the fragrance aisle.

Now, think of Jesus

and that zealously emotional woman.

In the middle of a dinner party

while men lounge discussing the important issues of the day

she cracks open a flask

and pours an entire bottle of potent perfume

all over Jesus.

Sure it anoints him—

it cascades through his hair, runs over his brows into his eyes,

stinging and making the world look fuzzy.

It streaks his face like tears, drips through his forest of beard

slips down his neck

slides under and over his robes

tickling and trickling over his stomach and back.

I hate to be impolite, but he is sitting in nard!
